The last ramparts of the Cotswold plateau and the Severn valley beyond were bathed in brilliant sunshine. On the far side of the river the Brecon Beacons and the Black Mountains loomed dark against the horizon. Smoke from an occasional stubble fire trailed low in the wind, dead on the nose. There was no sign of convection. I check the calculator again: "Five Three final gliding 10 miles." Aston Down, the last airfield on track, I'm home and dry. I push up the speed, gripped by the rising excitement of a racing finish. Two miles to go: "Five Three finishing in one minute!" - release the water ballast. Another Kestrel, ahead and below, hangs poised at the apex of his vapour trail, as our tanks drain together and we hurtle towards the line at upwards of 140 mph. The grass floods past, then falls and tilts crazily away. The wheel slams down. Moments later I am on finals, feeling the parachute's hefty drag, floating low across the threshold - and longing for a beer! Peter Scott was due to present the prizes. It was good to see an old adversary who had packed so much competitive gliding into fifteen short years. He had wasted no time at all. Buying a high performance two seater to build up his soaring and contest flying background with the help of an experienced pilot. Then a personal hanger in which he could keep his glider fully rigged and ready for take off at a moment's notice. A number of the most advanced sailplanes followed, Olympia 419, HP-14, and BS-1. Peter was National Champion in 1962 and British team squad member in the same year. Due to a prior commitment, as Skipper of the 1963 America Cup challenge, he was denied the opportunity of flying in a world contest. A natural who came to gliding late in life and went to the top. Once, during a long and tedious Council meeting when he was sitting next to me, Peter started to draw.
