GLOSSARY
1. C.R.E. Chief Royal Engineer.
2. "Project Cancelled" by Derek Wood.
3. E.T.P.S. Empire Test Pilots School.
4. B.A.F.O. British Air Forces of Occupation.
5. C.F.E. Central Fighter Establishment.
6. S.A.S.O. Senior Air Staff Officer.
7. R.A.E. Royal Aircraft Establishment.
8. M.A.P. Ministry of Aircraft Production.
CHAPTER EIGHT
1. G.G.S. Gyro Gunsight.
2. Hitting Power. Calculations made in recent years suggest that 16
Tornados carrying high explosive bombs could, due their increased
accuracy, achieve similar results to those of the 400 Lancasters on the
first Peenemunde raid.
3. F.C.P. Forward Control Post. Similar in function to V.C.P. (see chapter
6.) but without sight of the target. Trials conducted by 193 Squadron
after the war suggested that V.C.P. with a pilot controller could be very
effective. F.C.P. was less so but did not require a pilot in charge.
4. "Flying Start" by Group Captain Sir Hugh Dundas. Published by Stanley
Paul and Co Ltd.
5. E.N.T. Ear, nose and throat.
CHAPTER NINE
1. Air Transport Auxiliary.
2. B.G.A. British Gliding Association.
3. Vice Chairman of the B.G.A. and British Team Manager.
4. Press/Publicity Officer of the B.G.A..
5. Breaking Records. That flight set a new U.K. Goal flight record,
completed the 6th British Gold 'C', and was the first Diamond Goal
flown within the U.K.
6. Weihe. Probably the best production glider available at the end of the
war. A Hans Jacobs design like the Meise (Olympia). A few Weihes
were 'liberated' from Germany after the war.
7. Derated Days. To minimise the luck element in difficult weather
conditions. Essentially the maximum points for the day are reduced in
proportion to the soaring achievement of the competition entry, or class,
as a whole.
8. Launching Grid. Competing gliders are lined up as in motor racing and
launched rapidly once the conditions are deemed to be suitable. The grid
is 'rotated' day by day to give every pilot a similar share of early,
midfield and late launches during a contest.
