3. H.E. High Explosive.<br />

4. +7. Engine inlet manifold - or 'Boost' - pressure in lb/in2 above<br />

atmospheric.<br />

5. A.L.G. Advanced Landing Ground.<br />

6. P.S.P. Pierced Steel Plank. A temporary runway system based on<br />

interlocking, lightly corrugated, perforated steel sheets.<br />

7. Servicing Echelons. The Typhoons of 2nd TAF were looked after by<br />

engineering units, each of which carried the Squadron Number plus the<br />

prefix 6. They were never officially part of the Squadrons to which they<br />

were affiliated - presumably to retain maximum flexibility of deployment.<br />

CHAPTER FIVE<br />

1. A.P.C. Armament Practice Camnp.<br />

2. Gustav. German phonetic letter 'G'. Hence Me 109G or Gustav.<br />

3. E.O. Engineer Officer.<br />

4. Brat. Halton Apprentice.<br />

5. F.R. Fighter Reconnaissance. Also shortened to Fighter Recce.<br />

6. Longbow. Call sign of 84 Group Control.<br />

7. Hang Up. Bombs fail to release.<br />

8. Craven A. Nickname for Sqn Ldr Craven the Airfield Controller - from<br />

cigarette of the era.<br />

CHAPTER SIX<br />

1. M.R.C.P. Mobile Radar Control Post.<br />

2. V.C.P. Visual Control Post. The Controller was an experienced pilot<br />

responsible for directing close support aircraft at targets requested by the<br />

Army which, in theory at least, would have been visible from his forward<br />

observation position. See also Chapter 8. page 121.<br />

3. Slipper Tank. Belly mounted long range tank.<br />
