Avoid cost-intensive oil change in a hydropower plant <strong>VGB</strong> PowerTech 7 l <strong>2021</strong><br />
It’s all about the right oil mix<br />

In the current case, the <strong>VGB</strong> Oil Laboratory<br />
carried out tests which proved that blends<br />
<strong>of</strong> suitable oil types allow the continued<br />
operation <strong>of</strong> the plant without cost-intensive<br />
complete oil changes. In these oil<br />
blending tests, a temperature pr<strong>of</strong>ile is<br />
used to simulate several years <strong>of</strong> operation<br />
<strong>and</strong> oil ageing (F i g u r e 3 ). Different<br />
blend ratios also show how these oils could<br />
possibly affect operation. A wide variety <strong>of</strong><br />
blends can be set, leading to the identification<br />
<strong>of</strong> the optimum oil combinations <strong>for</strong> a<br />
particular system.<br />
Only a few national <strong>and</strong> international laboratories<br />
have the know-how to carry out<br />
such tests. One <strong>of</strong> the experts in this field is<br />
the <strong>VGB</strong> Oil Laboratory, which, as an independent,<br />
supplier-neutral service provider,<br />
<strong>of</strong>fers tailor-made support to <strong>VGB</strong> members<br />
<strong>and</strong> customers. Thanks to the expertise<br />
<strong>and</strong> experience <strong>of</strong> the laboratory team,<br />
the operator <strong>of</strong> the particular hydropower<br />
plant was able to save about 50 T€. In addition,<br />
costs were saved that would otherwise<br />
have been incurred <strong>for</strong> a complete oil<br />
change.<br />

in the testing <strong>and</strong> the evaluation <strong>of</strong> lubricating <strong>and</strong> insulating oils. In addition to the<br />
analysis <strong>of</strong> oils, the service team carries out interdisciplinary damage analyses <strong>and</strong> is also<br />
on site <strong>for</strong> sampling, inhibition <strong>and</strong> support <strong>of</strong> oil changes.<br />
In addition to the actual cost savings due<br />
to the blending <strong>of</strong> oils, the CO 2 balance<br />
<strong>of</strong> the operator is also improved. The production<br />
<strong>of</strong> one litre <strong>of</strong> turbine oil, <strong>for</strong> example,<br />
produces around 700 grams <strong>of</strong> CO 2 .<br />
If now a complete oil change is avoided<br />
by the blending tests carried out in the<br />
<strong>VGB</strong> oil laboratory, the emission balance<br />
is improved accordingly. In this respect,<br />
the <strong>VGB</strong> oil laboratory also contributes<br />
to the Corporate Social Responsibility<br />
(CSR) <strong>of</strong> its customers, because sustainable<br />
<strong>and</strong> resource-saving solutions are <strong>of</strong><br />
great importance <strong>for</strong> entrepreneurial action<br />
in order to remain competitive in the<br />
market.<br />
