The district occupied by Philippi was originally called Krenides,<br />

* Little Fountains ' (Strabo, 331 ; Appian, Bell. Civ. iv. 105), from<br />

the numerous springs which arose in the mountains on the north,<br />

<strong>and</strong> ran into the neighboring marsh.
