<strong>Chinese</strong> language teachers in K-<strong>12</strong> schools in the United States have an abundance of<br />

high-quality options for professional development programs to keep their skills fresh, learn new<br />

teaching techniques, and gain a deeper understanding of language structure and cultural<br />

pedagogy. Due to space limitations, here I’ll introduce just a sampling of the programs that<br />

current or aspiring <strong>Chinese</strong> language teachers might enroll in to take their career to the next<br />

level. Recognizing that different teachers have different needs from professional development,<br />

I’ve selected for introduction here programs that have different emphases and formats, as well as<br />

those that serve different regions of the country. Teachers who are interested in learning more<br />

can visit these programs’ websites, and also contact the Board for your nearest CLTA-affiliated<br />

Regional Association for recommendations of programs near you!<br />

Great for aspiring teachers who want to work in public schools in New England: Brandeis<br />

University MAT in Secondary Education (<strong>Chinese</strong>)<br />

Brandeis offers a wide variety of graduate programs in education, and the Master’s of<br />

Arts in <strong>Teaching</strong> (MAT) program prepares graduates to obtain Massachusetts teaching<br />

certification through a full-time, 13-month course of study. With in-depth coursework on<br />

subjects such as language acquisition, developmental psychology, the sociology of education,<br />

and more, graduates will be thoroughly prepared to engage with students in a wide variety of<br />

public school contexts. Strong collaborative relationships with local K-<strong>12</strong> schools allow for<br />

robust, embedded fieldwork and student teaching opportunities.<br />
