Sadly Professor Galster passed away in March 2009 and a memorial meeting to highlight and reminisce
on Wilf’s considerable scientific achievements was held in the Physics Department at the University of
Strathclyde on the 19th May 2009. Ken Ledingham, aided by Marialuisa Aliotta, described in detail his
scientific career including his early education at Erlangen followed by spells at ANU, the Hahn-
Meintner Institute, Berlin, the University of Tsujuba and the Catholic University of Louvain when he
had an important collaboration with The University of Edinburgh. Here he became Maitre de
Researche and established one of the first radioactive beam facilities. He returned to The University of
Tsukuba as a full professor. Finally he applied for, and was appointed, one of the first SUPA
appointments in 2006. He helped to establish at FZD Dresden the first Strathclyde beam line to
develop a laser induced proton oncology and laser back scattering facility. Unfortunately illness did
not permit him to complete this vision.
