Current Research<br />

Robert Thomson is a post-doctoral research associate in the nonlinear optics group at Heriot Watt<br />

University. His research interests are currently centred on the physics and applications of ultrafast laser<br />

inscription. Ultrafast laser inscription is a novel fabrication technique that relies on the use of ultrafast<br />

laser pulses to modify the properties of dielectric materials in three-dimensions. Ultrafast laser<br />

inscription is an incredibly flexible fabrication technique and can be used to directly inscribe optical<br />

waveguides, opto-fluidics, microfluidics and micro-mechanics in a large variety of materials.<br />

Currently, Robert is investigating the applications of ultrafast laser inscription in fields ranging from<br />

nonlinear optics to astrophotonics.<br />
