Current Research
Robert Thomson is a post-doctoral research associate in the nonlinear optics group at Heriot Watt
University. His research interests are currently centred on the physics and applications of ultrafast laser
inscription. Ultrafast laser inscription is a novel fabrication technique that relies on the use of ultrafast
laser pulses to modify the properties of dielectric materials in three-dimensions. Ultrafast laser
inscription is an incredibly flexible fabrication technique and can be used to directly inscribe optical
waveguides, opto-fluidics, microfluidics and micro-mechanics in a large variety of materials.
Currently, Robert is investigating the applications of ultrafast laser inscription in fields ranging from
nonlinear optics to astrophotonics.
