Current Research
My research centres around nanoscience, with particular emphasis on high spatial resolution
characterisation and property modification using electron and ion beams. My interest is stimulated by
the new physics that emerges at ultra-small length scales. While primarily a physicist, I lead
collaborations with materials scientists, chemists and electronic engineers. I study magnetic materials
extensively and have made major contributions to magnetic sensor and storage technology. I have also
pursued research into electronic materials, devices and particulate systems. Much of my work uses
electron microscopy and related analytical techniques where I have pioneered the development of novel
imaging techniques and methods of analysis. I aim to provide a quantitative characterisation of solids
on a near atomic scale.
