Current Research<br />

My research is concerned with the development of instrumentation and electron and ion beam<br />

techniques for finding structural, compositional and chemical information on the atomic scale and<br />

applying these techniques to functional and structural materials. The key here is the development of<br />

electron energy loss near edge structure as a nanoanalytical tool. In addition to using the world class<br />

facilities in Glasgow, I am an investigator on the UK SuperSTEM project. Materials under<br />

investigation currently include oxides on semiconductors to allow devices to continue to grow at the<br />

rate predicted by Moore’s Law and steels for higher strength materials.<br />
