Current Research
One of the most notable challenges facing cosmology today is the nature of the mysterious dark energy
introduced in the standard model of cosmology to account for the current accelerating expansion of the
universe. Many non-standard cosmologies have been proposed to eliminate the need for any form of
dark energy – one such model is the Sudden Future Singularity model; this model can display a nearfuture
sudden rise in the pressure while the energy density remains unaffected. The evolution of the
scale factor in this model shows that a current acceleration is indeed obtained without the inclusion of
any form of dark energy. We confront this model with current cosmological data to find out whether it
is physically viable.
