Current Research<br />

Photonic crystals are my dominant research theme, with a focus on the functionality they afford;<br />

examples include enhanced light-matter interaction in photonic crystal cavities, slow light in photonic<br />

crystal waveguides for low power optical switches and nonlinear effects, control of polarisation in<br />

polarisation diversity circuits and light extraction for LEDs. The work is highly collaborative and<br />

engages with several EU projects, one of which ("SPLASH") we lead. The material platform is<br />

increasingly silicon, as well as III-V semiconductors and, more recently, highly nonlinear chalcogenide<br />

glasses, all of which are processed to high precision in our in-house nanofabrication facility. A second<br />

major strand is research into Lab-on-a-chip devices for biomedical sensing; especially involving onchip<br />

integrated optical trapping.<br />
