Current Research
Current research activity is focused on aspects of precision interferometry for the planned spaceborne
gravitational wave detector, LISA. This is an ambitious mission that will use picometre metrology
ofver gigametere baselines to detect gravitational waves from a range of extreme astrophysical sources,
from supermassive black holes to compact object binaries. LISA is planned for the 2020 timeframe,
with a precursor technology demonstrator mission, LISA Pathfinder, due to launch around 2011/12.
For Pathfinder Glasgow is currently building the optical interferometry flight hardware that will
performs the key measurements of the mission. For LISA we are investigating measurement topologies
and have also embarked upon building a protoptype of the LISA interferometry core.
