That’s Pat’s dilemma and awin for the community each time he changes his mind”.HOW DO YOURETIRE FROMCARING?PAT’S 80TH,SEPTEMBER 2006At a Civic Award presentation that coincidedwith his 80th birthday Pat was honoured bythe Napier City Council on behalf of all thosewho have benefited from his mahi, and formaking and continuing to make a difference.Some of his closest colleagues reflected onPat’s contributions and his unique modusoperandi and their speeches acknowledgedthat he was about to retire. Wrong call! Bythis stage he’s threatened retirement severaltimes, usually when he’s finding the speed ofchange required to create that kinder, fairercity he’s so passionate about, way too slow.But how can you retire from caring? That’sPat’s dilemma and a win for the communityeach time he changes his mind.In the introduction to the presentations, Patwas told: “They say that what goes aroundcomes around, you get back what you put out,and you reap what you sow. For decades nowPat Magill has given himself, heart, body andsoul to the task of making our fair city a betterplace for all its citizens.“Now the people of Napier say thank you toPat, for his tireless work — building, strengtheningand connecting our community at thegrassroots level. Our city is a better place becauseof Pat’s tireless service to seeking solutionsfor Napier’s social problems.”Above: Pat is awarded an OBE by Sir Keith Holyoake in 1978, for hisservices to the community — he was national president of the YMCAat the time.
