ZWEI AUSSERGEWÖHNLICH FEINE
CHINOISE LOUIS XV-GIRANDOLEN
Höhe: 36 cm.
Turin, um 1740-1750.
Bronze, gegossen, ziseliert, vergoldet und lackiert.
Über aus Rocaillen und Akanthusblattwerk gebildetem
Sockel als Pendants gearbeitet jeweils eine sitzende
männliche und weibliche chinoise Figur in Laque Noire
mit roten und goldenen Höhungen. Hinter der Figur je
zwei naturalistisch als Zweige aufgefasste Leuchterarme
mit Blattwerktraufschalen und blütenartigen
Tüllen. Der Einfluss von Juste-Aurèle Meissoniers, dessen
Entwürfe durch sein „Livre d´Ornements“ von
1734 europaweit verbreitet wurden, ist noch deutlich
zu spüren in diesem seltenen bedeutenden Leuchterpaar,
das kurz nach 1734 in den Turiner Hofwerkstätten
entstanden sein muss. Besonders eindrucksvoll ist
die Fassung, die ein piemontesischer Laccatore unter
Hinzuziehung chinoiser Ornamente angewendet hat
wie Chrysanthemen und Bambus, währen das Inkarnat
der Figuren in Goldbraun gehalten blieb. Im Palazzo
Reale zu Turin haben sich Werke des piemontesischen
Bildhauers Francesco Ladatte (1706 - 1787), der sowohl
dekorative Kleinobjekte wie auch Großskulpturen
schuf, darunter auch Wandleuchter, die diesen hier
angebotenen Leuchtern nahe stehen. Auch ein Paar
Wandleuchter im Museo Civico di Arte Antica im Palazzo
Madama in Turin (Inv.Nr. 1053/B) und auch ein
Leuchterpaar, das am 21.März 2007 bei Sotheby´s in
London unter Lot 86 versteigert wurde, sind gut vergleichbar.

A PAIR OF EXTREMELY FINE CHINOISERIE LOUIS
XV GIRANDOLES
Height: 36 cm.
Turin, ca. 1740 - 1750.
Bronze; cast, chased, gilt and lacquered. A pair of pendant
figures of a seated male and a female in Chinese
attire. Black lacquer with red and gold highlights over
a base with rocailles and acanthus foliage. Behind
each figure are two candlestick arms naturalistically
shaped like branches, with foliage drip pans and floral
nozzles. The influence of Juste-Aurèle Meissoniers,
whose designs were spread throughout Europe by
means of his Livre d‘Ornements of 1734, are still
clearly noticeable in this rare, important pair of candlesticks,
which must have been made in the Turin court
workshops shortly after 1734. Particularly impressive
is the polychromy that a Piedmontese lacquer artist
applied using Chinese ornaments such as chrysanthemums
and bamboo, while the flesh tones of the figures
are rendered in golden brown. Creations by the
Piedmontese sculptor Francesco Ladatte (1706 - 1787)
are held at the Palazzo Reale in Turin. He created small
decorative objects and large sculptures, including wall
sconces such as the present candlesticks. Comparisons
can also be drawn with a pair of wall sconces in
the Museo Civico di Arte Antica in the Palazzo Madama
in Turin (inv. no. 1053/B) and a pair of sconces auctioned
on 21 March 2007 at Sotheby´s in London, lot 86.
