2 Setup and logon Setting up the McAfee Web Gateway appliance Gather necessary materials You must provide the following: • Standard VGA monitor and PS/2 keyboard or Serial console • Administration system with: • Windows or Linux operating system • Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version 1.6 or later • Microsoft Internet Explorer version 6.0 or later or Mozilla Firefox version 2.0 or later • Network cables To perform the installation with: • The software that was delivered to you on the hardware platform, continue with Connect and turn on the appliance. • Software you downloaded from the Extranet, continue with Installing downloaded software using a USB drive. Connect and turn on the appliance To begin with the installation: 1 Connect the appliance to power and the network. 2 Connect a monitor and keyboard or a serial console to the appliance. 3 Turn on the appliance. The installer menu appears. Continue with Installing the appliance software. Installing downloaded software using a USB drive If you do not want to use the software that was shipped to you on the hardware platform for setting up the appliance, you can download a different version from the Extranet for McAfee Web Gateway and use a USB drive to install it. Tools for copying the appliance software to a USB drive To copy the appliance software to a USB drive, you can use different tools. For example, you can use the dd tool, which is provided with the Linux operating system. The command syntax is: dd if= of= bs=16k where bs is the size of a data chunk that is buffered in memory during the transfer. Note: You need to be logged in as root administrator to execute the command. Also be aware that the copy operation will completely overwrite everything that was stored on the drive. For cygwin (Windows), the syntax of the dd command is the same. You can use the following command to find out what the USB device name is for your appliance drive: cat /proc/partitions If you do not want to use cygwin, you may also obtain dd for Windows from the Intel Software Network site. 22 McAfee Web Gateway 7.1.5 Product Guide
Setup and logon Setting up the McAfee Web Gateway appliance 2 Prepare installation from a USB drive To install the appliance software using a USB drive, begin with the following: 1 Go to the Extranet for McAfee Web Gateway and download a USB-format version of the appliance software. 2 Copy the appliance software to a USB drive. For more information, see Tools for copying the appliance software to a USB drive. Install the appliance software from a USB drive When you have the appliance software on your USB drive ready for installation, continue as follows: 1 Connect the appliance to power and the network. 2 Connect a monitor and keyboard or a serial console to the appliance. 3 Insert the USB drive into the appliance. 4 Turn on the appliance. The installation starts. 5 During the start phase, select the installation device: • If your appliance model is WG4500B, WG5000B, or WG5500B, press F6 to enter the Boot Manager and select USB Drive. The appliance software is installed on the appliance. • If your appliance model is WG4000B: a Press F2 to enter the BIOS setup menu. b Go to Boot Options. c Select Hard Disk Order and then the option that assigns the USB drive the highest priority. d Select the Exit tab. e Select Discard Changes. Note: Do not use Discard Changes and Exit here. f Go to Boot Manager. g Select USB Drive. The appliance software is installed on the appliance. • If your appliance model is not one of those specified above, press F11 to enter the Boot Manager and select USB Drive.
