Wildcard expressions Appendix: Configuration lists Wildcard expressions When completing configuration jobs on the appliance, you can use wildcard expressions for several purposes, for example, to match URLs on blocking lists and whitelists. There are two types of wildcard expressions you can use: • Glob expressions — Using these is the default. For information on some of the special characters used to create glob expressions, see List of important special glob characters. More information on using this type of expressions is, for example, provided on the following Linux man page: glob(7) • Regular expressions (Regex) — If you want to use these, you need to type the term regex first and then include the regular expression in round brackets, for example: regex(a*b) For information on some of the special characters used to create regular expressions, see List of important special regex characters. The regular expressions used on the appliance follow the Perl Regular Expression syntax. Information on this syntax is, for example, provided on the folIowing Linux man page: perlre(1) Test a wildcard expression When you add a wildcard expression to a list, you can test it before actually adding it. The Add Wildcard Expression window provides a Test button for this purpose. To test a wildcard expression: 1 Go to Policy | Lists. Note: You can also go to Policy | Rule Sets and access a list of the Wildcard Expression type by clicking its name in a rule name or in rule criteria. Then proceed as described in steps 3 and 4. 2 On the lists tree, go to Wildcard Expressions and select a list. 3 Click Add on the settings pane. The Add Wildcard Expression window opens. 4 Type a wildcard expression in the input field and click Test. The Wildcard Expression Test window opens and provides information on the expression.
