Tourism <strong>and</strong> accommodation tenures account for 45.3% <strong>of</strong> the total area currently tenured in BC. These tenures<br />

have the largest average area per tenure at 12,893 hectares, 62 while tenures in the energy sector (2 hectares) <strong>and</strong><br />

the residential sector (2 hectares) have the smallest average area per tenure (Figure 25).<br />

The number <strong>of</strong> tenures that are active varies at any given time. The number <strong>of</strong> active tenures is determined by<br />

the number <strong>of</strong> approved tenures minus the tenures which are cancelled or expired. Changes in tenure status are<br />

<strong>of</strong>ten driven by market forces.<br />
