Why is this Important?<br />
The BC l<strong>and</strong> base is vast <strong>and</strong> highly diverse, ranging<br />
from high mountain tops to marine estuaries <strong>and</strong><br />
from dense forests to glaciers. The different types <strong>of</strong><br />
ecosystems that exist throughout the province can<br />
result in dramatically different l<strong>and</strong> use management<br />
<strong>and</strong> resource considerations.<br />

Key <strong>Statistics</strong><br />
In this section Provincial Baseline Thematic Mapping<br />
(BTM) is used to determine coverage <strong>of</strong> l<strong>and</strong> use <strong>and</strong><br />
l<strong>and</strong> cover types across BC (Map 3). BTM data is<br />
derived from aerial photographs, biogeoclimatic data,<br />
<strong>and</strong> satellite imagery. <strong>L<strong>and</strong></strong> use refers to the economic<br />
use, such as mining or urban development, while<br />
l<strong>and</strong> cover refers to vegetation <strong>and</strong> other features that<br />
cover the l<strong>and</strong>, such as forests <strong>and</strong> water.<br />
