tall buildings and in most low buildings. A hydraulic elevator is a<br />

powered elevator to which energy is applied by a liquid under pressure<br />

in a cylinder equipped with a plunger, or piston. This type is used for<br />

low-rise freight service and may be used for low-rise passenger service<br />

where low initial cost is desired. For an electric elevator, the car is<br />

raised or lowered along its guides by wire ropes controlled by the<br />

drawing machine. For a hydraulic elevator, the car is seated on the<br />

plunger, which moves up and down under the control of hydraulic<br />

pressure.<br />

The main components of an elevator system are hoistway, car, machine<br />

room and landing as shown in Figure 7.1.<br />
