2. Information Technology (IT) Systems Development: <strong>Process</strong> models<br />

are used in IT development projects as a means for discovering and<br />

capturing the information content of a process and how that<br />

information is to be exchanged between participants in the process.<br />

3. Common Understanding of the <strong>Process</strong>: <strong>Process</strong> models are also an<br />

important learning tool. A process model helps people visualize<br />

where they are in a process and what they need and must produce<br />

and when. In this way, it provides the basis for effective<br />

collaboration.<br />

Although the product modeling area has been well-established and<br />

related work is more or less complete, process modeling still presents a<br />

relatively less explored research domain (Eastman, 1999). In this<br />

dissertation, the problem of collaboration in building design is studied<br />

from a process modeling perspective.<br />
