y Paraguay).
The Photo of Reminiscences
The scene is almost 20 years old. It is from 15 June 1993. Alex
Aguinaga, a star of Ecuadorian football, kicks the ball with his left foot
as goalkeeper Rafael Dudamel comes forth. The Red Wine midfielder
Sergio Hernández watches the scene wondering what to do. This
happened in the inaugural match of the 1993 Copa América, disputed in
Ecuador. The Ecuadorian National Team defeated the Venezuelan squad
6-1 before 45,000 enthusiastic spectators that crowded the Atahualpa
Stadium. It was the greatest number of goals they attained in their history
of the competition. Aguinaga, one of the tournament’s key figures,
scored one of Ecuador’s goals. Ecuador, already in full evolution of their
football, won the first four matches (they also defeated the United States,
Uruguay and Paraguay). Afterwards, they unexpectedly fell in the
semifinal against Mexico that were playing a Copa América for the first
time and they got to the final. Montenegrin Dusan Draskovic, known as
the coach that revolutionized Ecuadorian football, directed him in this
Cup, as he had already done in 1989 and 1991.
