OBITUARIO TRANSITION
Alberto Benítez
(Paraguay)
Alberto Benítez, volante zurdo habilidoso, de
buenas campañas en Rubio Ñu y otros
equipos paraguayos, falleció el 17 de febrero.
Debutó en la institución ñuense en 1970 en un
triunfo sobre Olimpia. Integró los planteles de Libertad
(campeón 1976), Sol de América (vicecampeón
1978), Guaraní, Nacional (subcampeón
´82) y Colegiales, cuando ascendió a Primera en
1983. Fue parte de la Selección Paraguaya en la
Copa América de 1975 y en la Eliminatoria para
el Mundial ’78. Fue entrenador en diversas
categorías. Era hermano de Néstor
Benítez Segovia, director de
comunicaciones de CONMEBOL.

on 17 February. He made his debut
in the Ñu institution in 1970. He
formed part of Libertad’s rosters
(1976 champion), Sol de América
(vice-champion 1978), Guaraní,
Nacional (runner-up ’82) and
Colegiales, when he was
promoted to First D. in 1983. He was also part of
the Paraguayan Team in the 1975 Copa América
and the Qualifiers for the 1978 World Cup. In the
1979 Libertadores, he scored a goal for Sol’s tie
against Bolívar, and he qualified to Olimpia,
afterwards champion. He was also a coach of
several categories. He was the brother of Néstor
Benítez Segovia, CONMEBOL media director.

Luis Cruzado (Perú)
El brillante volante peruano Luis Cruzado
Sánchez falleció en Lima el 14 de febrero.
Emblema de Universitario, fue 7 veces campeón
con el cuadro crema y finalista de la Libertadores
de 1972. La Copa ya lo había conocido
en 1961, cuando el campeón Peñarol
tropezó en el estadio Nacional de Lima. Era
un crack que unía técnica con temperamento.
Después de haber jugado las Eliminatorias
de 1962 y 1966, el ‘Colorado’ mostró su clase
en el Mundial de México ’70. Volante adelantado
a su tiempo, se tituló con la ‘U’ en
1959, 1960, 1964, 1966, 1967, 1969 y 1971.
Fue elegido segundo vicepresidente de la institución
en 2011.
‘Lucho’ Cruzado era tío del internacional
Rinaldo Cruzado, que juega en Newell”s Old
Boys de Argentina y de Juan Carlos Bazalar, hoy
entrenador del Pacífico FC, ambos internacionales
por Perú también. “Se fue uno de los grandes”,
señaló el diario El Comercio de Lima.

The brilliant Peruvian midfielder Luis Cruzado
passed away in Lima on 4 February. An emblem
of Universitario, he was 7 times a champion with
the cream-coloured squad and a finalist in the 1972
Libertadores. The Cup had already met him in
1961 when champion Peñarol stumbled in Lima’s
Nacional Stadium. He was a crack that joined
technique to his temperament. After having played
the Qualifiers of 1962 and 1966, the ‘Red’ evinced
his high class in Mexico’s 1970 World Cup. An
advanced midfielder of his time, he achieved the
title with the ‘U’ in 1959, 1960, 1964, 1966, 1967,
1969 and 1971. He was elected second vicepresident
of the institution in 2011.
‘Lucho’ Cruzado was the uncle of international
Rinaldo Cruzado who plays in Newell’s Old boys of
Argentina and of Juan Carlos Bazalar, at present,
coach of the Pacific FC, both international players
also of Peru, as the Journal “El Comercio”, of Lima,
wrote that he was one of the great key figures of
Peru that had passed away.
Luis Carlos Leitão jugó en las divisiones juveniles de Flamengo y llegó a
Caracas a comienzos de los años ´60 para incorporarse al Deportivo
Portugués. Se radicó en Venezuela, donde también vistió la camiseta de
UD Canarias y continuó su carrera como entrenador. Se dedicó al desarrollo
del fútbol menor en los colegios Fray Luis de León y San José de Calasanz,
el Centro Italo Venezolano y la UCV. Jubilado, se residenció en la Isla
de Margarita. Falleció el 26 de enero.
Luis Carlos Leitão played in Flamengo’s juvenile divisions and arrived
at Caracas at the beginning of the sixties to incorporate himself to
Deportivo Portugués, with which he disputed the Libertadores Cup. He
settled in Venezuela where he also donned the UD Canarias‘ shirt and
continued his career as coach. He devoted himself to the development
of lower football in such schools as Fray Luis de León and San José de
Calasanz, the Italo-Venezuelan Center and the UCV. Once retired,
he settled in the Margarita Island. He passed away on 26 January.
El primer arquero de la Vinotinto durante una Eliminatoria mundialista,
Johnny Arocha, falleció el 31 de enero en Caracas. Además participó
en los Juegos Bolivarianos de 1965 e integró el plantel de la Copa
América 1967. Fue jugador del Unión Deportiva Canarias y del Portuguesa
FC. En la Recopa Sudamericana de 1970 mantuvo en cero el
arco del UD Canarias. Su hijo Rubén integró las distintas categorías de
la Selección Venezolana y juega actualmente en Deportivo Petare.
The first goalkeeper of the Red Wine team during the world cup
qualifiers, Johnny Arocha, passed away on 31 January, in Caracas.
He also participated of the 1965 Bolivarian Games and formed part
of the roster in the 1967 Copa América. He was a player of Unión
Deportiva Canarias and Portuguesa FC. In the South American Cup
Winners’ Cup of 1970, he kept the goal of UD Canarias in cero. His
son Rubén, formed part of the different categories of the Venezuelan
National Team and at present, plays in Deportivo Petare.
