Peñarol and Nacional shared
the laps of honour between
them at the Centenario
Stadium. There was no possibility
for any other club to be the
Uruguayan champion, since the
beginning of the professional era
in 1932. On 25 July 1976, the
history in the Luis Franzini
Stadium, the name of Defensor’s
historical president for three
decades changed. It was the
pioneer who broke the hegemony
and marked a way, under the
coaching of professor José
Ricardo De León.
In the Punta Carretas area,
near the light-house (current
symbol in the coat of arms), and
the Prison (where Montevideo
shopping is located at present),
the neighbours and the boys
who worked at the glass factory
gathered to play. They formed a
team which in conflicting times
was called “Defensores de la
Huelga” (Strike Defenders). They
joined the League on 15 March
1913 with the name “Defensor
Football Club”. The only available
colour in the store was violet,
which has remained in the hearts
of several generations for a century.
OLYMPIC GLORIES
He made his debut in First
Division in 1915. In 1924, his
left half and founder Alfredo
Ghierra, won the Olympic gold in
Colombes. Right wing Juan Emilio
Píriz (historical scorer with 98),
copied him in Amsterdan 1928,
when he was still Universal‘s
player.
José ‘Loncha’ García was
shining in the National Team until
1949, when he was transferred to
Italy’s Bologna by a record figure.
Ramón Ferrés moved along the
left side until the age of 43, the
unforgettable coach, Hugo
Bagnulo, also donned those
colours. In the fifties, fabulous
Pepe Sasía stood out and he
returned in the sixties to put an
end to his career. In 1952, the
Argentine star, José Manuel
Moreno, joined the club. The list
of foreigners includes Herminio
Masantonio, Claudio Vacca and
Ernesto Mastrángelo.
The year 1957 ended with
Peñarol in a 5-1 score and the
conquest of the Quadrangular
among the first players of the
championship. The eleven
footballers were Radicci, Sosa and
Climaco Rodríguez, Casanovas,
Ferreira and Amaral, Willy Píriz,
Héctor Demarco (later on, the
idol of Italy’s Bologna), Walter
Hernández (top scorer of the
year), Sasía and Ferrés.
Professor De León was
incorporated in 1971. The 1975
campaign ended with 7 victories
in the last 8 dates. In those days, a
glory formed in the club, Ricardo
Elbio Pavoni, lifted the Copa
