nerviosos e ilusionados, pero logramos
aguantar el 5 a 4.
-¿Lo definiría como un gran
equipo aquel de Bolivia?
-Sin duda. Era una selección
muy fuerte, bien preparados físicamente.
Con un espíritu enormemente
luchador y con técnica depurada.
Teníamos tres jugadores
argentinos nacionalizados: Roberto
Caínzo, lateral derecho de mucha
experiencia y muy técnico; Eulogio
Vargas en la banda izquierda, de
gran entereza y fortaleza; y Eduardo
Espinoza, zaguero fino, técnico.
Entre los bolivianos también estaba
Max Ramírez, un gran central, hábil,
muy fuerte. Formamos un equipo
en gran forma, con enorme optimismo.
Y el apoyo de la gente fue
fundamental.
-¿Cómo fueron las expresiones
de júbilo popular después
del torneo?
-Después del partido con Brasil,
que fue en Cochabamba, el viaje
era por avión a La Paz. La pista estaba
inundada por miles de personas.
Había por lo menos cinco
mil personas. La gente se metía directamente
desde los campos vecinos,
sin entrar por el edificio del aeropuerto.
El avión no podía bajar.
Cuando fuimos a aterrizar, el piloto
tuvo que levantar vuelo otra vez
porque podía haber una desgracia.
Tuvieron que despejar la pista… La
llegada fue muy emocionante,
querían los zapatos, las medias los
pantalones, todo, la gente nos
abrazaba. Ya tras ganar la semifinal
a Argentina había sido así.
-Se paralizó el país...
-Los festejos duraron mucho
tiempo, fueron 15 días de fiestas y
agasajos, bailes en las calles. Yo me
escapé a Cochabamba, porque ya
era demasiado...
Fue el 31 de marzo de 1963.
La fecha en que un país entero experimentó
el húmedo y fuerte
abrazo con la gloria.
He has been predestined. He
certainly was. He made his
debut in the First Division at
15 years of age, forged himself
playing with Víctor Agustín
Ugarte, the Professor; when he
was 18 years old he got to the
Argentine football; went up with
Bayern Munich, sharing the
team with Maier, Müller and
Beckenbauer; travelled throughout
the world, trained the Bolivian
National Team at least 6 times and
a dozen squads. He participated
in a large number of Qualifiers,
Copas América, Libertadores and
was the key figure of the South
American Championship (it was
so called in those days) won by
Bolivia in 1963.
Fifty years from that exploit of
Bolivian football, we remember
him together with the team’s
leader, considered as one of the
tournament’s figures, namely
Ramiro Blacut, footballer, coach,
civil engineer, consular figure of his
country’s football.
You started by no other
player than Víctor Ugarte.
Yes, I was in the reserve and in
Bolívar’s 4 th , I played as a ‘10’, but I
got far, and in those days a ‘10’
was a second half. Nevertheless,
Hugo Flores, the right midfielder
was injured and the coach asked
me if I wanted to play there. I was
only 15 years old and said “yes”.
Imagine my audacity, the
emotion… I played as midfielder
with the right insider that was
Víctor Ugarte, a professor. During
that year and a half, almost two
that I played with him, it was like
going to a magic school. From
then onwards, I never left that
position and finally I became a
regular player. That was in 1959.
Is Ugarte the greatest
Bolivian football of history?
I think that “Yes”, because he
was a juggler with the ball and
besides he was excellent in all he
did, he played with his two feet,
was an ‘8’ coming and going,
designed the game, scored goals
and also marked. It was a pity that
he did all that in a rather amateur
era. If it had been today, he would
