Materials and methods
In the experimental work being carried out several residual and sedimentary
commercial kaolins from Portugal and England. Also, a kaolinitic red clay and a
ball clay from Portugal were used.
Wall Formation Rate determinations were carried out according to CTCV
(Centro Tecnológico da Cerâmica e do Vidro) internal procedure and Filtration
Rate determinations were carried out according to American Society for Testing
and Materials C866-77 norm.
WFR was determined using cilindrical plaster moulds (plaster/water=1.2
wt/wt), about 8 cm high and 10 cm wide, with an internal conical hole, about 4.5
cm of top diameter, 5 cm of height and 3.5 cm of bottom diameter. The casting
time was: 2, 5, 7 and 9 minutes.
The slip casting used in both methods was prepared with the following
characteristics: density 1,550 g/L, viscosity 500 cP. The slip was dispersed with
sodium silicate (50% wt/wt).
Results and discussion
Both properties, wall formation rate and filtration rate, are dependant of the
same textural and mineralogical parameters, therefore it is appropriate to
establish a relationship between them.
The table 1 contains both WFR and FR values.
