The objective of the present study is to put in evi<strong>de</strong>nce the mineralogical<br />

characteristics of the c<strong>la</strong>y fraction in or<strong>de</strong>r to contribute to a better knowledge of<br />

the sedimentary dynamics of this area.<br />

95 undisturbed samples were collected using “Smith-McIntyre” type grab<br />

sampler. The mineralogical composition of the c<strong>la</strong>y fraction was analysed by X-<br />

Ray Diffraction. For semi-quantitative <strong>de</strong>terminations criteria recommen<strong>de</strong>d by<br />

Schultz (1964), Barahona (1974) and Thorez (1976) has been followed.<br />

Results and discussion<br />

The dominant mineral in the c<strong>la</strong>y fraction is illite with an average content of<br />

53%, followed by kaolinite (average 27%) and smectite ( 11%). Minor components<br />

are chlorite ( 6%), irregu<strong>la</strong>r mixed-<strong>la</strong>yers illite-chlorite ( 3%) and illite-smectite (<br />

2% ). The distribution of illite, kaolinite, smectite and chlorite is show in figure 2.
