Having come into the tournament looking
to qualify for the knockout stages and
return home with a medal, Nigeria were
disappointed to lose 2-1 to Germany in the
quarter-finals.
The Nigerians opened the competition
with a 1-0 win of Japan. The Africans were
competitive from the kick-off, playing with
great mobility and aggression. For much of
the game, they allowed their opponents to
control the tempo, but were always dangerous
going forward and on the break, and it
was one such counter attack that produced
the winner. In their second match, Nigeria
lost 2-1 to a Swedish side who had gone
into the game needing a win to secure their
place in the knockout stages. Nevertheless,
the Nigerians still qualified for a quarter-final
against Germany and were leading 1-0 until
their opponents struck twice in the last fifteen
minutes to take the game. Performances
characterised by invigorating counter-attacks,
high work rate, good physical conditioning,
well-honed technique and pace confirmed
that the Nigerians have made further strides
towards the top of the women’s game. A
cautious playing style (with a sweeper and
tight marking), technical skill and good fitness
levels made the Nigerians tough to play
against. With subtle tactical changes, a more
flexible set-up and extra zest for the game,
the Nigerians could well have got the better
of more favoured teams and realised their
medal hopes.

médaille. Après une défaite 2-1 en quarts
de finale contre l’Allemagne, elles n’ont pas
atteint cet objectif.
Dans leur premier match, elles se sont
imposées 1-0 face au Japon. Dès le début,
elles se sont montrées très mobiles, solides
dans les duels et agressives. Elles ont laissé
les Japonaises dicter le jeu mais se faisaient de
plus en plus dangereuses sur leurs attaques et
leurs contres. Une belle contre-attaque leur
a permis d’ouvrir le score. Dans le deuxième
match, contre la Suède, alors que les Scandinaves
luttaient encore pour la qualification,
les Nigérianes se sont inclinées 2-1, mais se
sont tout de même qualifiées pour les quarts
de finale. Elles ont plié devant les Allemandes
dans les quinze dernières minutes après avoir
pourtant mené 1-0. Mais elles se rapprochent
peu à peu du sommet du football féminin
grâce à leur jeu de contre rafraîchissant, leur
engagement, leur bonne condition physique
et leur rapidité. Leurs adversaires ont éprouvé
des difficultés face à leur jeu classique (libero
et marquage individuel) associé à une technique
raffinée et à un bon physique. Une
tactique plus élaborée, une organisation
plus flexible et une touche d’imprévisibilité
dans leur jeu leur permettront de battre les
grandes équipes et un jour de remporter une
médaille.

física. Con una mayor dosis de táctica refinada,
organización más flexible y astucia, el
once africano hubiera tenido la posibilidad de
derrotar a sus rivales más poderosos y lidiar
por una de las medallas.

In ihrem ersten Spiel des Turniers erreichten
die Nigerianerinnen gegen Japan einen
1:0-Sieg. Die Afrikanerinnen zeigten sich von
Anfang an sehr beweglich, zweikampfstark
und aggressiv. Sie überliessen das Spielgeschehen
mehrheitlich den Japanerinnen,
waren bei ihren Angriffen und Kontern aber
immer wieder sehr gefährlich. Einen schön
herausgespielten Gegenangriff schlossen
sie zum 1:0 ab. Im zweiten Spiel gegen
Schweden, als die Nordländerinnen noch
um die Qualifikation für die nächste Runde
rangen, musste Nigeria eine 1:2 Niederlage
hinnehmen, qualifizierte sich aber dennoch
für das Viertelfinale. Dort lagen sie gegen
Deutschland mit 1:0 in Führung, bevor die
Deutschen in den letzten 15 Minuten mit
zwei Toren das Spiel noch drehen konnten.
Nigeria hat sich mit erfrischendem Konterspiel,
viel Einsatz, guter konditioneller Verfassung
und technisch versierten und schnellen
Spielerinnen näher an die Weltspitze gespielt.
Die Gegnerinnen kamen mit der konservativen
Spielweise der Afrikanerinnen (mit Libero
und Manndeckung), gepaart mit technischer
Finesse und guter konditioneller Verfassung,
nur schlecht zurecht. Mit etwas verfeinerter
Taktik, flexiblerer Teamorganisation und
mehr Spielwitz hätten die Nigerianerinnen
gute Chancen, auch die so genannt grossen
Teams zu schlagen und ihren Medaillentraum
wahr werden zu lassen.
