You’re holding your
breath. Literally. With fins
on your feet at a depth
of twenty metres, you’re
waiting on a very special
visitor. And there it is: it
looms closer, brushes by
you, and you suddenly feel
very small. Your visitor
is a humpback whale,
gracefully undulating
its 25 tonnes through
the water. You do a few
strokes in its company
before it disappears into
the dark blue deep. Can
you really rub shoulders
with these giants of the
seas? Yes! This dream
come true takes place off
the Great Barrier Reef,
where expeditions bring
you face-to-face with these
amazing, enormous marine
mammals. Less intrepid
sorts can see them from the
boat deck. From May to
November, whales put on a
show all along Australia’s
east coast. With a bit of
luck, you’ll be splashed by
one of their breathtaking
leaps. Majestic!
