As in previous years we continued and expanded the role
we play in the traditional economy and arts in Nunavik. Since
we initiated the construction of sewing centres in Nunavik, we
have built four additional ones in the past fiscal year bringing the
total to 10 since 2010. The sewing centres are being well used
and are quickly becoming areas of congregation and storytelling.
At Nunavik Creations we continued making and buying garments
to sell and we opened up a small retail office at our Inukjuak
workshop. Nunavik Creations is also in the process of revisiting
its overall mission and the way it does business. Our goal in the
near future is to concentrate more on our internal market and
provide more support for Nunavik seamstresses. Our tannery in
Kuujjuaq also re-opened last year. Harvesters can send their furs
here to be cleaned and tanned.
The Ivakkak Dog Team Race has become a much-anticipated
event in Nunavik. Our department coordinated the race as 12
mushers started off in Kangiqsualujjuaq. This was the first time
the race was not timed — the first team to reach the finish line
in Kangirsuk was the winner. Aside from the mandatory layovers
in each community, there were no required stops in between
the towns. The finish line in Kangirsuk was reached first by Peter
Kiatainaq, then Willie Cain Jr., and third was Novalinga Novalinga.
It was our eleventh year for our Nunavik art workshops, which
took place in Kangirsuk for 12 days, with 34 art students. Carving,
printmaking and Amaarutik design were taught. This was the
final year of our three-year funding agreement with Canadian
Heritage and we are happy to announce that we secured funding
for the next two years.

Nous avons continué d’accroître notre rôle dans l’économie
traditionnelle et les arts. Depuis le lancement du programme des
centres de couture au Nunavik en 2010, nous avons construit dix
centres, dont quatre au cours du dernier exercice. Ces centres
sont bien utilisés, et deviennent rapidement des lieux de rassemblement
et d’échanges.
Les Créations Nunavik continuent de fabriquer et d’acheter des
vêtements pour la vente, et nous avons ouvert un petit point de
vente au détail dans notre atelier Inukjuak. L’entreprise réexamine
en ce moment son mandat et son modèle d’affaires. L’objectif dans
un proche avenir sera de cibler davantage le marché intérieur et
d’offrir plus de soutien aux couturières du Nunavik. Notre tannerie
de Kuujjuaq a rouvert ses portes, et les chasseurs peuvent envoyer
leurs fourrures pour y être nettoyées et tannées.
La course de traîneaux à chiens Ivakkak est devenue un événement
très attendu au Nunavik. La course qui commençait
cette année à Kangiqsualujjuaq comptait au départ 12 équipes.
Pour la première fois, la course n’a pas été chronométrée, la première
équipe à franchir la ligne d’arrivée à Kangirsuk remportait
l’épreuve. Outre les arrêts obligatoires dans chaque communauté,
aucun arrêt n’était requis entre les villages. Peter Kiatainaq a été
le premier à franchir la ligne d’arrivée à Kangirsuk, suivi de Willie
Cain Jr. et de Novalinga Novalinga.
