A wildlife technician and biologist participated in an international
beluga age-determination workshop in November 2011
at Beaufort, North Carolina, USA. Experts there compared age
determination techniques. Makivik research technicians are
well experienced in aging marine mammals, fish and bivalves.
Waterfowl studies
No nest survey of Canada geese was done in 2012 as the survey
is now being conducted in alternative years due to funding
constraints. A total of 1,422 birds were banded with 628 adults
and 794 goslings on the Ungava Bay coast. On the Hudson Bay
side, there were 2,148 with 804 adults and 1,344 goslings.
Polar bear research
In fall 2012, we participated in an aerial survey for polar bears
in eastern Hudson Bay. Results are being analyzed by Quebec provincial
biologists and are expected by spring 2013. The Nunavik
Research Centre will commence a polar sampling program with
the province of Quebec and Environment Canada in 2012.
Un biologiste et un technicien de la faune du CRN ont participé
à un atelier international sur la détermination de l’âge
des bélugas tenu en novembre 2011 à Beaufort en Caroline du
Nord. Les participants à cet atelier ont comparé les techniques
de détermination d’âge. Les techniciens de Makivik possèdent
beaucoup d’expérience concernant la détermination de l’âge des
mammifères marins, des poissons et des coquillages bivalves.
Études sur la sauvagine
Aucun relevé de nids de bernaches n’a eu lieu en 2012, car
les relevés sont désormais effectués tous les deux ans en raison
de restrictions budgétaires. Au cours de l’exercice, 1422 oiseaux
ont été bagués sur la côte de la baie d’Ungava (628 adultes et
794 oisillons), et 2148 oiseaux ont été bagués sur la côte de la
baie d’Hudson (804 adultes et 1344 oisillons).
Recherche sur l’ours blanc
Nous avons participé au cours de l’automne 2012 à un relevé
aérien des ours blancs dans la partie est de la baie d’Hudson.
Les biologistes du gouvernement du Québec procèdent en
ce moment à l’analyse des résultats qui devraient être publiés
d’ici le printemps 2013. Le Centre de recherche du Nunavik a
entrepris en 2012 un programme d’échantillonnage de l’ours
blanc en collaboration avec le gouvernement du Québec et
Environnement Canada.
