The mining file continues to be important for Makivik. China’s
appetite for minerals seems to be on the wane, which is driving
down world demand while decreasing pressure on our land. In
the likelihood that activities do not stop, we want to be ready to
deal with them. This is why we hired a mining liaison officer to
maintain a link between Makivik, mining companies, communities
and local entrepreneurs with the objective of increasing
Inuit control over business development for Nunavimmiut. We
are also working on developing a mining policy for Makivik to
facilitate negotiations with mining companies. Closely related to
the mining file, we are completing the validation of our Nunavik
Inuit Enterprises Directory, which we hope to have online in the
next year.
After six years of product development and test marketing,
we decided to close down Nunavik BioSciences Inc. Although,
the markets for the products seemed promising, the return on
our investment and locally to our beneficiaries did not justify
the continuation of the company.
As part of our mandate, we are invited to many meetings
and conferences. In the early fall I was lucky enough to make
presentations to the Federal Roundtable on Infrastructures.
There I met ministers Steven Fletcher and Denis Lebel who are
working towards a new long-term infrastructure plan. The areas
of concern that I brought up are general infrastructures, telecommunications
and safe harbours for the Arctic. We hope projects
related to the Arctic are going to be created through the new
program that begins in 2014.
We have also initiated a series of negotiations with the
Canadian government with the objective of transferring

vêtements Amaarutik. Il s’agissait de la troisième et dernière année
de notre entente de financement avec Patrimoine Canada, mais
nous sommes heureux d’annoncer que l’entente a été renouvelée
pour deux autres années.
Le dossier minier demeure très important pour Makivik.
L’appétit de la Chine pour les ressources minérales semble s’atténuer,
entraînant ainsi la demande mondiale à la baisse tout en
réduisant la pression sur notre territoire. Nous devons toutefois
être prêts à faire face à un regain d’activités dans ce domaine.
C’est pourquoi nous avons embauché un agent de liaison dans
le secteur minier afin de maintenir des liens entre Makivik, les
sociétés minières, les communautés et les entrepreneurs locaux
afin d’accroître le contrôle des Inuits sur le développement des
affaires au profit des Nunavimmiut. Nous travaillons également à
l’élaboration d’une politique minière pour faciliter les négociations
avec les sociétés minières. En lien notamment avec le développement
minier, nous terminons la vérification de l’information
contenue dans l’annuaire des entreprises inuites du Nunavik qui
devrait être accessible en ligne très bientôt.

nous avons décidé de fermer Biosciences Nunavik.
Les marchés pour les produits semblaient prometteurs, mais le
rendement sur investissement et les retombées locales pour
les bénéficiaires ne justifiaient pas la poursuite de l’entreprise.
Dans le cadre de notre mandat, nous sommes invités à de
