NOTE.—In <strong>the</strong> protologue <strong>of</strong> C. plumaris var. brevipes, ].<br />

Agardh cited as a synonym Fucus sertularioides S.G. Gmelin,<br />

a species with <strong>the</strong> West Indies as its type locality, but<br />

indicated <strong>the</strong> provenance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> variety as "in pacifico<br />

calidiore." An examination <strong>of</strong> pertinent specimens in <strong>the</strong><br />

Agardh Herbarium (in LD) would probably resolve <strong>the</strong><br />

conflict.<br />
