NOTE.—Fucus bacciferus Turner, the intended basionym
of Sargassum bacciferum, is a superfluous and hence illegitimate
name since F. natans was cited as a synonym in the
protologue. In the first edition of Flora de Filipinas, M.
Blanco (1837:839) described this entity as a new species,
Fucus denticulatus (a name used previously for four different
species!). Martens (1868:45) pointed out that Blanco's description
fits various species of Sargassum. In the absence of
authentic specimens, no definitive placement can be made.
Montagne's record, on the other hand, is documented by
extant collections (Cuming 2251, presumably at PC and
possibly other herbaria) and could be re-evaluated.

TAXON OF UNCERTAIN VALUE
The following infraspecific taxon is probably related to
Sargassum oligocystum, but has not been formally transferred
to it.
