Codium Stackhouse
A preliminary study (unpublished) of Philippine Codium
was made by P.C. Silva in 1950-1951 as part of a worldwide
survey of the genus, but with special reference to Hawaii
(Silva, 1952b). It was concluded that the representation in
the Indonesian-Philippine region posed many problems that
could not be solved until the genus as a whole was better
understood. Subsequently, the Codium flora has been
worked out for five temperate regions—southern Australia
(Silva and Womersley, 1956), South Africa (Silva, 1959),
New Zealand, Japan, and Pacific Mexico (the last three
unpublished)—each showing a high degree of endemism.
In addition, the Codium flora of the tropical Atlantic has
been worked out (Silva, 1960), but Indonesian-Philippine
collections that have become available since 1951 have been
examined only superficially. At present, it is easier to say
which species do not occur in the Philippines than it is to
say which ones are there.
