Family POLYPHYSACEAE<br />
The families Dasycladaceae and Polyphysaceae were described<br />
simultaneously by Kutzing (1843). The latter, which<br />
included Polyphysa and Acetabularia, was merged into <strong>the</strong><br />
former by subsequent workers, but was resurrected by<br />
Hauck (1884 [1883-1885]:421) under <strong>the</strong> name Acetabulariaceae.<br />

NOTE.—Polyphysa Lamarck (1816:151), characterized by<br />
<strong>the</strong> lack <strong>of</strong> an inferior corona, is usually treated as a section<br />
<strong>of</strong> Acetabularia, following <strong>the</strong> monograph <strong>of</strong> Solms-Laubach<br />
(1895:21). Recently, however, it has been resurrected at<br />
<strong>the</strong> generic level (Bailey, Rezak, and Cox, 1976) and Acetabularia<br />
clavata transferred to it (Schnetter and Meyer,<br />
1982:41).<br />
