NOTE.—Dictyota dentata Lamouroux (1809a:42), <strong>the</strong><br />
name usually applied to this species, is illegitimate because<br />
Lamouroux cited Fucus atomarius S.G. Gmelin (1768:125,<br />
pi. X: fig. 1) as a synonym and <strong>the</strong>refore should have<br />
retained <strong>the</strong> epi<strong>the</strong>t atomaria. This epi<strong>the</strong>t cannot be reinstated<br />
now, however, because two o<strong>the</strong>r species have subsequently<br />
been given <strong>the</strong> name Dictyota atomaria. Moreover,<br />
Lamouroux erred in his taxonomic opinion, since Fucus<br />
atomarius is representative <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> red algal genus Odonthalia<br />
(see Papenfuss, 1950:189). The conspecificity <strong>of</strong> D. dentata
