NOTE.—Fucus lichenoides Turner, <strong>the</strong> intended basionym<br />

<strong>of</strong> Gracilaria lichenoides (and o<strong>the</strong>r combinations), is a later<br />

homonym <strong>of</strong> F. lichenoides S.G. Gmelin (1768:120, pi. VIII:<br />

figs. 1, 2) and hence not priorable. Gigartina lichenoides<br />

Lamouroux is treated as a nomen novum in accordance<br />

with Article 72, Note 1, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ICBN. Fucus lichenoides<br />

Turner is not only a later homonym, but also superfluous,<br />

since its protologue included <strong>the</strong> citation <strong>of</strong> F. edulis S.G.<br />

Gmelin.<br />
