NOTE.—J. Agardh (1848:318) was uncertain whe<strong>the</strong>r his<br />

plant from <strong>the</strong> Moluccas was conspecific with Sargassum<br />

duplicatum Bory de Saint-Vincent (1828 [1826-1829]: 127;<br />

type locality: Pacific Ocean between Tahiti and New Zealand)<br />

and later (1889:90, 123) recognized his S. duplicatum<br />

as a species distinct from that <strong>of</strong> Bory de Saint-Vincent.<br />

Womersley and Bailey (1970:296) treated <strong>the</strong> two species<br />

as one entity, which <strong>the</strong>y merged into 5. cristaefolium.<br />

TAXON OF UNCERTAIN VALUE<br />

The following infraspecific taxon is probably related to<br />

Sargassum cristaefolium but has not formally been transferred<br />

to it.<br />
