NOTE.—The synonymy was proposed by Newton
(1953:412). Sphaerococcus canaliculars Kutzing, the intended
basionym of Gracilaria canaliculata, is a later homonym
of 5. canaliculars C. Agardh (1822a:260) and hence
not priorable. Gracilaria canaliculata Sonder is treated as a
nomen novum in accordance with Article 72, Note 1, of
the ICBN.
