You can find a different variety of
euphorbia on Capri: the trigona, like a
giant candelabra with long arms reaching
towards the blue sky. According to
Pliny, this generic term was coined by
Dioscorides in honour of Euphorbius,
physician of Juba, king of Numidia and
Mauritania, who first identified the
euforbia (the specific term refers to its
triangular stalk). Also known as cathedral
cactus, this plant can often be quite
large and sometimes even majestic.
Its unique sharp silhouette caught the
eye of Ico Gasparri, photographer of
the Mediterranean region and author of
Capri! La foglia e la pietra, an original
book that parallels the architecture of
Capri with the marvelous forms of its
vegetation photographed in a series of
close-ups
and daring angles.
