This book offers a presentation of the English complementation system, within
the general framework of Chomsky‟s Minimalist Program (Chomsky 1995, 1998,
1999). An extensive fragment of the English complex sentence is covered, namely, the
domain of complement clauses, including that-clauses, infinitive clauses, ingcomplements,
and small clauses (gerund and some participial constructions). The hope
is that the theory illuminates the systematicity of the data, without detracting from its
richness. Due attention is systematically paid to semantic and, sometimes, discourse
considerations, always choosing the syntactic analysis which offers the best
syntax/semantics fit.
