Victor Newmann is professor of history at the West University of Timişoara. He is
specialized in intellectual history and the history of concepts in Romania and East-
Central Europe during the modern and contemporary periods. He was Fulbright fellow
and Rosenzweig fellow at the Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies in Washington,
D.C. and visiting professor at the University of Angers (France); Emory University,
Atlanta (USA); Foreign Service Institute in Washington, DC; Sorbonne, Paris;
University of Vienna. He is the author of many books; among them: The Temptation of
Homo Europaeus, East European Monographs, Columbia University Press, New York,
1993; Between Words and Reality. Studies on the Politics of Recognition and Changes
of Regime in Contemporary Romania (The Catholic University of America, Washington,
DC, 2001); Conceptually Mystified East-Central Europe Torn Between Ethnicism and
Recogntion of Multiple Identity (Enciclopedica Publishing House, Bucharest, 2004),

The End of a History: The Jews of Banat from the Beginning to Nowadays
intends to fill a gap of information in contemporary historiography. It ranges over a
period of 270 years and centers on the demographic movement, the organizational, legal
and political status of the communities over time, religious issues, education, culture
and emancipation. This book offers a new perspective of the particularities that have
characterized the Jews in this part of Europe.
