ORGANIC CHEMISTRY – CHEMISTRY OF COMPOUNDS WITH MIXED FUNCTIONAL
GROUPS (Part I)
Format 8/61x86, 190 pag., ISBN 973-575-966-7, 973-575-967-5
The book has been divided into four chapters. Chapter 1 provides information
about stereochemistry and stereoisomers. After a short review of the conformers and
geometric (cis-trans) isomers that were studied in the first year of organic chemistry,
the isomers that result from having a chirality center (the most recently IUPACapproved
term for a carbon bonded to four different substituents) are discussed.
In Chapter 2, specific types of difunctional compounds are presented, pointing out
some of the unique chemistry that results from the cooperation or interaction of the two
functional groups. The compounds considered are diols, hydroxy aldehydes, hydroxy
ketones, and hydroxy acids, because their chemistry is fundamental to a study of
carbohydrates. In Chapter 3, carbohydrates, the most abundant class of compounds in
the biological world, are presented. In Chapter 4 the authors consider another large
and important class of difunctional compounds, amino acids. Amino acids constitute a
particularly important class of difunctional compounds because they are the building
blocks from which proteins are constructed. Bioorganic material is introduced
throughout this text to encourage students to recognize that organic chemistry and
biochemistry are not separate entities, but two parts of a continuum of knowledge.
