was a particular focus on cemeteries and fortifications that would assistunderstanding of the ancient city’s size and layout. Another part of theinvestigation was to record recent illegal excavations and other damage, andto assess its extent and impact. A total of 189 archaeological features wererecorded across an area of ca. 450ha (Fig. 5).CemeteriesConsiderable attention has been paid to the cemeteries of Pessinus by thearchaeology teams from Ghent University over the past 30 years. According topublished information, there are five necropoleis on the plateaus and hilltopssurrounding the ancient city (we shall use the term ‘cemetery’ below ratherthan ‘necropolis’). These do not, however, reflect the totality of areas wherefunerary remains are present.Documentation of funerary evidence was a major concern of the 2010surveys. This sought accurately to record places of burial and also to institutea new naming protocol for cemeteries and other archaeological features. Thecemeteries are classified according to a scheme of number and cardinal pointsof the compass (Fig. 1).In the past, the most thoroughly investigated cemeteries have been NorthCemetery 1 (Sector I, 1987-91) and East Cemetery 1 (Sector A, 1967). Most ofthe other cemeteries, however, are inadequately documented. There has beensporadic recording of select tombs in other areas, but never a synthesis of theevidence from different areas at different stages in the Pessinus’ history. On a hilltop SW of North Cemetery 1 was noted a previously unrecordedcemetery (North Cemetery 4), comprised of a concentration of pits (oldlooting and/or unreported excavations) and scattered material associatedwith graves – marble tomb fragments, fine pottery, and human remains. One stone-lined grave on a spur north of North Cemetery 4 (F083) waspreviously documented in 2001, 4 and another cemetery arguably lies on thisplateau (North Cemetery 5).4 Devreker et al. 2003, 156.116
