L. 2: or with iota adscriptum on the stone, like l. 1L. 3: ligature M + H.L. 4: ligature M + N + H.Translation:To Aelia Phil[ - ], (his) alumna, L(ucius) Aelius Eume[los?] (raised thistombstone) in memory. The mention of an alumna is noteworthy, so far no other alumnus or alumnahave been attested in Pessinus. 174. Pess10.1 (Fig. 15).Fragment of a stele of grey marble of very bad quality; found by chancein 2010 in the wall of a house north of the modern cemetery of Ballıhisar. Thestone is broken on all sides.H. 0.320m; w. 0.270m; th. 0.200m.The inscription has been incised under a small moulding. Profoundlyincised and rather regular lettering: h. 0.040m.Date: 3rd century AD.Before l. 1: few traces of undistinguishable letters.17 The restoration of the name is not certain. or could also bepossible, nevertheless, is obviously more common. It is a Greek name, which becamea cognomen. L. Aelius Eume[los] might have been a freedman. L. Aelius was the name of thefuture Antoninus Pius (before the beginning of his reign, 138), therefore, I suspect a freedmanof the future emperor (and if so, the monument dates in the first half of the 2nd century AD)or a citizen whose ancestor was a freedman before 138. L(ucii) Aelii are rather rare, not onlyin Galatia but elsewhere. For the relief, I.Pessinus 172 offers the best local analogy.129
