New InscriptionsAlexandru AVRAMFour new inscriptions were studied in 2010, all funerary.<s<strong>tr</strong>ong>1.</s<strong>tr</strong>ong> Stele with fronton and acroteria of yellowish marble (Fig. 12); 11 discoveredby chance in the village of Memik and brought in 2010 by the police to thePessinus dig-house. The stele is almost completely preserved. Only the upperpart of the cen<strong>tr</strong>al acroterion is missing, while the left acroterion is damagedabove. The under part finishes with a raised moulding and a tenon (H. 0.090m;w. 0.260m; th. 0.080m) for fixing the stele to a base.H. <s<strong>tr</strong>ong>1.</s<strong>tr</strong>ong>050m; w. 0.350m (above); 0.395m (fronton); 0.420m (below); th. 0.090m(stele) to 0.105m (fronton).Above the inscription incised on the under part of the stele there are <strong>tr</strong>acesof red painting.Profoundly and carefully incised letters but with variable dimensions. h.0.023–0.028m (except for the bar of phi, 0.040m).Date: 2nd/1st century BC.Translation:Maiphates, son of Anoptes, greetings.This is one of the few Hellenistic funerary inscriptions ever found inthe area of Pessinus. It is interesting to note thatis the name of a11 Without inventory number. Eskişehir Archaeological Museum intend to move this inscriptionto their new premises and have said that they will allot it a number in their sequence.126
