Because different species of actinomycetes and moulds showed different
immunomodulation effects on macrophages, it is reasonable to assume that different
microbial communities in damp building materials may have different health effects.
The immune system involves the action of many different cell types. The preliminary
results obtained in this study with specific cells are, therefore, not yet suitable for
interpretation of causal relationships or effects on human health.
From the preliminary results obtained on the toxic and immunomodulating effects of
actinomycetes, a comparison with corresponding effects of fungi is not possible.
Further research is warranted including a broad spectrum of cell lines and synergistic
effects between different microorganisms. Experience from in vitro experiments using
chemical substances may be beneficial in the planning of further experiments.
