Übernachtung in Reykjavik
Auf www.hotels.com, einer Hotelbuchungsseite,
findet sich eine große Auswahl an
isländischen Hotels, beispielsweise das
modern ausgestattete Art Deco Hotel Borg,
das sich im Herzen Reykjaviks, nur
100 Meter vom Parlament entfernt, befindet.
Währung
Die Landeswährung ist die isländische Krone
(Abkürzung üblicherweise: kr., ISK). Alle
isländischen Banken wechseln Geld.
Zeit
Island liegt ganzjährig in der Zeitzone
Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), d.h. im
Winter 1, im Sommer 2 Std. Zeitverschiebung
zu Mitteleuropa.
It is not only the landscape that is an
experience on the second largest
island nation in Europe. The countless
cultural highlights and festivals are also
not to be missed because Icelanders
sure know how to put on a good party!
And there is certainly no lack of opportunity
for a real celebration. The 19th of
April, for example, is a statutory holiday
– the end of the dark season in Iceland
is celebrated in fitting style on the “first
day of summer”.
Less than a month later, the Reykjavik arts
festival opens its doors. From 12 to 26 May,
international artists from various fields
including classical singing, ballet and acrobatics
meet there and present their talents.
From 8 to 17 June in Hafnarfjördur, visitors
to Iceland can become immersed in a totally
different world. This is when the notorious
Vikings come back to life and their fans from
all around the world come to visit.
The Icelanders also stage sports events for
their guests. During the Arctic Open Golf
Tournament from 20 to 23 June, on the
longest day (or shortest night) of the year,
golfers can tee off all night long thanks to
the midsummer night sun. All those who do
not consider golf to be a sport but merely a
stroll through nature taking several hours
might be rather more tempted by the midsummer
night marathon on 22 June at Lake
Myvatn.
Reykjavik displays its full-colour splendour
from 10 to 12 August. Over these three
days, the whole city is caught up in the
“Gay Pride” spirit. A little more classic but
no less colourful is the cultural evening on
18 August. There is something for everyone
in the programme of Reykjavik’s biggest
cultural event – 400 different acts in the
fields of music, art, dance and sport are presented.
The city almost bursts at the seams
as on average around two thirds of
the population of Iceland takes advantage
of this huge cultural smorgasbord. Shops,
museums and galleries are open the whole
night, encouraging visitors to linger and
discover. What is more, the Reykjavik marathon
takes place on the same day.
Travel
At the end of September, three cultural
highlights simultaneously compete for
record numbers of expected visitors: the
Reykjavik Jazz Festival, the Reykjavik International
Film Festival (RIFF) and the Indie
music festival Iceland Airwaves.
Whichever event you choose, the beauty
of Iceland is that a visit to the breathtaking
landscape of the island is always there to
provide a change of scene. With the film or
music of the night before still playing in your
head, you can hop on the next bus and soon
find yourself amid geysers, waterfalls, lava
fields and lagoons.
