ring and walks towards the bandstand near
the entrance of the museum. Freshly brewed
beer is served here – and cheese with cumin,
another Baltic speciality.
All around people are singing and making
music, the young and the old celebrate
cheerfully together. Occasionally young couples
jump across the fire holding hands. This
is supposed to strengthen their love for each
other.
Others went to the sea of the museum village
to let little lights float on the water. This
is supposed to remind of John the Baptist,
the “Light of Humanity”. Religion and superstition
mix to create a festival of traditions.
In the meantime the young couple came
back from collecting ferns. They seem to be
satisfied. Slowly but surely the cold arrives,
dew appears on the herb. In former times
people thought that taking a bath in the
dew would purify the body and restore
health. But most of the visitors start thinking
about a warm bed.
The next day we arrive in the Curonian
Spit. Here each year at St. Johns Eve a whole
festival takes place. Picking herbs, weaving
garlands, fortune telling and singing is on
the programme. And also a dance of the witches
and the St. John Bonfire. “Cheerful” is
the word of the day when singers and
dancers from several nations perform on the
big stage in the port of Nidas. Local television
is present and the Eve of St. John has
already become a huge media event. The
only birthday of a saint celebrated by the
church has become an important day in the
formerly socialist regions of the Baltic. For
most it’s the most important day in summer.
The hotels and pensions are often booked
out. And not only in the Curonian Spit.
Very popular are the beach and the banks
of the river for celebrating the event. But
even more famous are the mystical places
like the mount of St. John near Klaipeda (Lithuania),
the bishops castle in Saaremaa
(Estonia) or the Renka Garden in Ventspils
(Latvia). This are places to feel good and try
to divine the future, places where reality and
fantasy mix and become one for a couple of
hours. The grey routine of everyday live
makes way for the colourful atmosphere of
the festival.
How to get there
Ryanair offers flights to Lithuania every
Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday
(Kaunas). Latvia can be reached daily via
Riga. Flights to Gdansk are available
each Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and
Friday.
